So I bought Dr. Demento Covered in Punk and have listened to the first disc. Shonen Knife's cover of "Eat It" is cool; it departs a bit from the "Beat It" source and has a "Smoke on the Water" sort of thing going on. And Brak's version of "Institutionalized" (complete with ukulele, kazoo, etc.) has to be one of the greatest cover songs ever recorded.

erilaz wrote:Whoever thought of having Brak cover "Institutionalized" is a genius of the highest order.

According to the CD booklet, this was Stacy Isenhower, the wife of Andy Merrill (the voice of Brak).

It's not related, but the first thing that came to mind was this:

(This is from an anime about cycling, where the best part of the anime is the main team of cyclists singing the theme song to a fictional magical girl anime that the protagonist is a fan of (and gets one of his friends hooked on).)

She was one of the great writers of her generation. The Lathe of Heaven had a major impact on my own psychological and philisophical outlook, and looking back, I'd say that her writing style and basic concerns had an equally strong impact on my (attempts at) writing.

I have decided not to talk smack about chrome anymore, just because the combination of Firefox and Windows 8.1 is not working properly on an increasing number of websites.

I just did a Google image search for yangire Miku.
That could keep me entertained for hours, except that I have to finish work, go to sleep, get up in the morning, and pretend that I'm sane. :mikihead:

If you're looking for a new pen — because you're not satisfied with the ubiquitous Pilot G2, or whatever — I recommend the Inc. R-2 Rollerball. It is possibly the smoothest pen I've ever tried (and I've tried a lot; I'm a bit of a nut for JetPens.com). If it were available as a retractable, I think it would be the perfect pen for me.

Weirdly, this pen is only sold in Dollar Tree stores. In fact, I think "Inc." is a Dollar Tree store brand. You can find it being resold on eBay and Amazon Marketplace and so on, but at a significant markup. It's supposed to be a two-pack for a dollar ('cuz it's Dollar Tree, of course).

Update on the street where my rental property is located: I drove by today and they finally had the big equipment out and they were in the process of taking down the first of the dozen or so houses that are boarded up and scheduled for removal. As I drove by (doing around 15 MPH) one of the workers stepped out from behind a vehicle without looking and I had to slam on the brakes not to hit him. He had a good "oops, I screwed up" look on his face.

Happy late birthday!
(I think I don't even see birthday notifications any more, since I mostly use the mobile version.)

So the other day it was 37:crazy:. In a couple of places it even apparently got to 42℃. Yesterday it was 15℃ (and 10℃ overnight). NZ had a heatwave (one of the places farthest south got to 32℃, for example) and now we've been hit by a tropical cyclone and there's flooding in a lot of areas although thankfulyl not here.

Climate change, I guess? Wellington's been getting to 30℃ this summer and when I lived there it barely got above 18℃. This is pretty nuts, lol.

That sounds like nasty weather. :fear:

In Southern California (where it should still be close to the middle of winter), we've been getting highs in the low to mid 80s °F (the high 20s °C), which is a little strange, even for the inland valleys near Los Angeles.

Berkeley had a high of 73℉/23℃ today, with similar temperatures expected through the weekend. We're looking at record highs for this time of year; the previous record for February 2nd was 70℉ in 1995.

If you’re really missing winter weather that much, you’re welcome to come to the Midwest. We’re looking at below normal temperatures and 1-3 inches per day, almost every day, for the next week.
