I like both eras for different reasons. I miss Tsunku because I think he's a genius, but both have their charms.

Back when Tsunku was almost doing everything people applauded every song that was done by someone else. Now so many songs are done by other writers/producers people applaud every song that is done by Tsunku.

That's how it always goes of course, you always like the things that bring the variation.

I just got home from seeing this. Obviously it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know about the Japanese idol phenomenon, but I thought it did a decent job of presenting the subject to an audience that (for the most part) probably knew little or nothing about it. I thought it was a pretty balanced depiction without any blatantly negative agenda, though some reviews that I read seemed to think otherwise. With no narrator and a limited number of onscreen captions to give some background and identify the people in the film, it let the idols, their fans, and sometimes the idols' parents do most of the talking. They also had a handful of media and academic talking heads (including Hyadain) giving their views. One male sociologist and one female journalist provided most of the negative comments about the idol industry and especially the fans. Will most American viewers come away from the film thinking that middle-aged, male, idol otaku are perverted, pathetic losers, despite the film's even-handed treatment? Well, yeah. But what else would you expect?

As for the dramatis personae, none of the H!P girls appear in the documentary, though we do get a few shots of an Up Up Girls (仮) handshake event. Most of the film focuses on solo idol Hiiragi Rio and her 43-year-old super-fan Koji, but we also get bits on Yuka from P.IDL, Amu from Harajuku Monogatari, Yuzu from Amore Carina, and Ōshima Ryōka from AKB48 (not so much her as her wota).

Here's an intelligent article about the film, including an informative interview with director Miyake Kyōko:

:?:

It's not wrong, as far as it goes, but it's not particularly insightful either. It's mostly just a review of the documentary that erilaz watched, and that was slanted to begin with. Any other details in the article obviously came from the sort of Google-research that passes for journalism these days. The writer has no real knowledge of the idol industry. Any of us could do better.

See also the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect.

My main issue with the documentary is that it only exaggerates the problems with the industry for shock value.

"But for the fans, there's probably a sexual component." i.e., generalised statements like this.
Just because these guys choose to live like this, it doesn't mean everyone is like this.

I reckon saesang culture in Kpop is much more worse than overly supportive middle aged men. But you don't see any documentaries exploring that.

Well, now we know why the BBC posted an article about the documentary: they broadcast it last Wednesday (or at least an abridged version of it)…

I'm genuinely curious what everyone thinks of it.

It was previously announced they would begin renovations and expansion in 2019, but they decided to begin after March 2018 instead and it would be finished by June 2020.

It will be interesting to see what venue H!P will use as a temporary replacement that is the same size as Budokan.

options like Makuhari Messe hall in Chiba or the new venue in Ikebukuro that Menno mentioned two years ago.

Zepp Fukuoka is also being revived. It will be built inside a new commercial mall on the 2nd floor.

Today, actress Matsuoka Mayu was on the show Shabekuri 007. She talked about her Morning Musume and Sayashi Riho obsession. She says that even though Momoiro Clover Z Momota and C-ute Suzuki Airi were her school classmates, she was a dedicated fan of the "New Morning Musume" (when 9ki joined) for 3 years. Host asked "Why didn't you support your classmates?" Matsuoka : "no way!"

Go big or go home, SSA here we come. The Yoyogi arena would also have been an option, but that one is also being renovated for 2020. The project in Ikebukuro will also only be completed in 2020.

Maybe we will see more outdoor venues like Momochi's location last Friday. They will have to creative over the next couple of years.

Outdoor venues are a good idea only in seasons when the weather isn't shit. In summer they'd be great.

Pink Cres' new song reminds me of some of E-girls' stuff. Like Anniversary.

I always thought it would've been smart if UF did a song like this for Hello Project since this style seems to be popular with girls. C-ute had a song sort of like this with Urayanjyau but that was never made a single.

I'm still bitter about some recent a-side choices.
Like did we really need Singing Anogoro no You ni or Feel Kanjiru Yo as an a-side? Nope.
I'm only saying this again to make my frustration clear to our UF insider tbh. /jk

????????????????????

Just because you didn't like a song doesn't mean it shouldn't have been an a-side. And Singing is a great song, it's an emotional message from Tsunku about how innocent the girls were when they started out and that they only wanted to be idols because they loved singing. The lyrics are for a song that was meant to be an a-side.

And you can't really complain because we get multiple a-sides per single now.

Tbh the only a-side that's actually been terrible lately has been Just Try!. I'll give you that Feel! Kanjiru yo is boring, but it's not bad. Majokko Meguchan doesn't count because it's a cover song for an event (same with Ora wa Ninkimono, although that's stretching the definition of "lately").

Both of the songs are fine. I just would've preferred different type of songs from their discographies to have gotten a PV and promoted as an a-side over the two I mentioned.

Someone watched Produce 101. I wouldn't really want any Hello! Project girls to participate (I don't think it's likely they would anyway). And Akimoto is involved in the production of the group, which is an immediate turn off for me - even if the show itself is entertaining.

I doubt we will see any of the debuted girls in this program, unless one of them really wants a change. Just participating will probably be a reason for UF to terminate the contract straight away. That without any guarantee to be chosen for the new group. But former Egg/KSS or even current KSS might try it.

With all the TV talent shows around the world the last 10 years it's actually surprising that something like this didn't happen earlier in Japan. Except for Asayan of course, but that was before these talent shows became popular around the world.

I personally would love to see H!P do it. Produce 101 was so successful it single handedly dragged PLEDIS out of the mud (PRISTIN and NU'EST are becoming successes because of that damn show). If it was half as successful it would STILL bring some great publicity to H!P.

I ran across a video of old MUSIC FAIR21 appearances by Morning Musume (+Matsuura Aya) where they performed idol song medleys, and got a sudden surge of happiness when Matsumoto Iyo popped up to perform one of her songs with Abe and Tsuji.

Back when I first saw these I didn't know who she was and wouldn't have cared, and it's been long enough that I barely remembered the songs included, but now (thanks to Karin) I love Matsumoto so it felt like a lovely little treat despite it's age.
